The possibility of being on the ground, with a direct impact on the execution and development of the business, was decisive.

On a personal level, I saw this step as an opportunity to evolve as a manager, in an environment where the ability to adapt, read context and make decisions have a direct impact on results and value creation.

2 — What advantages or disadvantages did the fact that you are Portuguese bring you?

In a Portuguese-speaking context, there is a clear advantage in terms of cultural proximity and ease of communication, which significantly accelerates the construction of relationships of trust and integration in different business contexts.

The historical presence of Portuguese companies in Mozambique also contributes to positive recognition, facilitating access to partners, customers and already established networks. In the case of Ferpinta, this continuity between Portugal and Mozambique allowed it to consolidate its presence in a more structured and consistent way over time.

On the other hand, this proximity can also create the expectation of immediate adaptation, when in reality there are relevant operational differences that require time and learning.

More than nationality, the differentiating factor turns out to be consistency in execution, credibility built on the ground and the ability to deliver — and that’s where, in my experience, Portuguese professionals stand out.

3 — What obstacles did you have to overcome and how did you do it?

The main challenge was adapting to a different operational context, where European models are not always directly applicable. Issues such as logistics, supply chain predictability, bureaucracy, or access to resources require a more flexible and pragmatic approach.

The answer was to adjust the way of working, privileging proximity to the field, speed in decision-making and the ability to continuously adapt.

Another critical factor was cultural integration. Despite the common language, there are relevant differences in the way of working, communicating and managing expectations. Learning involves active listening and valuing local teams, which have a deep knowledge of the context and are essential to ensure operational effectiveness.

This experience reinforces the importance of more agile management models that are less dependent on rigid structures.

4 — What do you admire most about the country where you are?

The structural potential of the country. Mozambique has a very relevant natural resource base and a geostrategic position that places it as an important point in the Southern African region.

There is also significant room for development, which represents clear opportunities for those who are willing to invest with a medium and long-term vision, also taking on the challenges inherent in a growing market.

5 — What do you admire most about the company or organization where you are?

The ability to align a family business culture with a long-term strategic vision while maintaining a high degree of agility in responding to the market.

There is a real commitment to people, reflected in the stability of the teams. In Mozambique, out of a universe of about 140 employees, more than 20 have been with us since the beginning of the operation, which demonstrates trust and consistency over time.

At the same time, I would highlight Ferpinta’s ability to quickly adjust its strategy when market conditions change. In 2019, for example, the bar represented only about 5% to 10% of our turnover and was a segment where we acted as another operator.

Faced with a downturn in the steel market, with an impact on the sale of tubes and plates, we repositioned our approach and invested more aggressively in rod trading, integrating it as a strategic area of the business.

Today, this decision has translated into a leading position in the market, with the male representing around 50% of turnover in the domestic market.

This logic of adaptation also applies to foreign markets. In periods when markets such as South Africa presented unfavorable conditions, namely due to exchange rate volatility, we strengthened geographic diversification and were proactive in entering new markets.

Currently, countries such as Zimbabwe and Malawi are assumed as reference markets for the operation, highlighting the importance of a flexible and opportunity-oriented approach.

6 — What recommendations would you give to Portugal and its entrepreneurs and managers?

Portugal has a very solid base of talent and skills, widely recognized internationally.

The experience outside the country reinforces the perception that Portuguese managers are highly competent, with strong execution capacity, resilience and adaptation to different contexts.

The main recommendation is to strengthen ambition and scale. There is the capacity to compete globally, but it is important to assume this position with greater confidence, strategic vision and consistency in internationalization.

In addition, the ability to adapt — often associated with “getting by” — should be seen as a structured competitive advantage, which can and should be integrated into more formal management models oriented towards sustainable growth.

In an increasingly competitive global context, this combination of flexibility and rigor can be decisive.

7 — In which sectors of the country where you live could Portuguese companies find customers?

Mozambique presents relevant opportunities in structuring sectors such as infrastructure, energy, industry, construction and logistics, all of which are fundamental for the country’s development.

In addition to these, there is growing potential in areas such as specialized technical services, industrial maintenance and technology, where Portuguese know-how can have a significant impact on modernizing processes and increasing operational efficiency.

The growth of projects linked to natural resources and urban development also creates indirect opportunities in various support sectors.

Companies with technical capacity, flexibility and long-term vision find in Mozambique a challenging market, but with real growth potential.

8 — In which sectors of Portugal could companies in the country where you live want to invest?

Portugal maintains an attractive position in the tourism and real estate sectors, supported by factors such as political stability, security and quality of life.

In addition, the technology sector has been asserting itself consistently, with an increasingly competitive ecosystem, capable of attracting international investment and qualified talent.

This combination of quality of life, infrastructure, and technical capacity makes the country particularly interesting for foreign investors.

9 — What is the competitive advantage of the country in which you live that could be replicated in Portugal?

One of the main advantages is the agility in decision-making and in the implementation of solutions.

In developing markets, there is greater structural flexibility and less reliance on complex processes, which allows us to respond quickly to challenges and opportunities.

This ability to simplify and focus on execution can be a relevant learning for more mature economies, where bureaucracy and procedural rigidity tend to delay decisions.

It’s not about reducing demand or control, but about finding a more efficient balance between structure and agility.

10 — Are you thinking of returning to Portugal? Why?

In the short term, the focus is on the development of the project and the consolidation of the company’s presence in the market.

We are in a phase of growth that implies not only strengthening the current position, but also moving forward with a more aggressive expansion strategy, namely through physical entry into markets such as Zimbabwe and South Africa, as well as the creation of new delegations in emerging areas within Mozambique.

At the same time, we have been investing significantly in increasing the range of products, with the introduction of new equipment and more advanced technologies, which allow us to better respond to market demands and increase our competitiveness.

This set of initiatives requires a continuous presence on the ground and close monitoring of operations, which, at this stage, makes a return to Portugal immediately unlikely.

Even so, Portugal will always continue to be a personal and professional reference. It’s where I have my roots and where I maintain a constant connection, facilitated by the nature of the role and the mobility it allows.

As part of the partnership between the Portuguese Diaspora Council and Jornal de Negócios, Ricardo Ribeiro, COO at Ferpinta Moçambique, reflects on his professional experience in a growing international market.
[12

Interview with Ricardo Ribeiro: "It is necessary to strengthen ambition and scale"
