He would come for 18 months to Cambridge. My girlfriend, a good job and a car were waiting for me to return. After 6 months, my girlfriend left me for someone else, the job seemed very boring compared to what my colleagues did and the nostalgia for the USA, unexpectedly, was appearing (last Thanksgiving, loss of access to top entrepreneurs and leaders of multinationals, the optimism and openness of American culture, the constant reinvention and dream of a better future). I decided to stay two more years and see how I would feel. I’m still here.

2 — What advantages or disadvantages did the fact that you are Portuguese bring you?

At first level, the great advantage was to have been accepted by the program. I think Harvard allocated at least 2 places (out of 900) in the program to Portuguese, and I was lucky enough to be considered in the top 2 that year. Humility, sense of history, ability to adapt and get by and spirit of discovery and breaking new frontiers that are part of the Portuguese spirit also helped me a lot to adapt to the USA. A historian told me that the migratory peoples and discoverers of Europe stayed in Lusitania when they migrated west and hit the Atlantic. Americans made the same westward migration less than 200 years ago. That spirit is still alive in the USA and I think it unites the DNA of the two peoples a lot.

After that, logistically, there were many disadvantages. Portugal was unknown. The little that was known about Portugal was more associated with sport, culture and tourism. For those who wanted to assert themselves as a financier in the best institutions and in the most advanced and competitive market in the world, this was (and continues to be) a handicap. Finally, the lack of an organized Portuguese diaspora (compared to others) did not make it easy either. It’s good that the Portuguese Diaspora Council has been changing that in the last decade and offers me the honor of helping with that.

3 — What obstacles did you have to overcome and how did you do it?

At first, the visa was almost impossible (as a result of September 11). Then, my investment banking career at BPI in Portugal was not (and is) not considered. For Wall Street, anything outside of the main names in the market (Goldman, Morgan Stanley, JP Morgan…) is viewed with great reticence.

How to overcome obstacles? In a word: performance. In inputs: be the first to arrive and the last to leave; seize every opportunity that arises; seeing the hard work that no one wants as an opportunity to move up the career ladder; Helping and being generous to the people we work with, inside and outside the firm. In outputs: as an investor, the result is quantified every year. The rate of return has to beat competitors year after year. Ideal situation for an outsider like me.

On a second level, all these difficulties brought very important advantages, at a young stage of my career. I was forced to act high-agency. Stop having complaints about others or the system, stop feeling sorry for yourself and roll up your sleeves, go prove on the ground the quality of the work, and that the Portuguese can and should have successful careers on Wall Street.

4 — What do you admire most about the country where you are?

Many things! Each one deserved a conversation: generosity, honesty, compliance with the law, professionalism, self-criticism, capacity for reinvention, support for those who venture out and break ground, passion for second (and third) chances, spirituality and hope for a better future, focus on innovation, tolerance for experimentation, community spirit, low hope in public agencies to solve problems, and welcoming immigrants as Americans at 100% and without asterisks (something I didn’t feel at all London or Madrid).

5 — What do you admire most about the company or organization where you are?

First (and only?) Portuguese company founded and headquartered on Wall Street in the investment area. Still young, but daring and seeking to open the ground for other Portuguese financial companies to triumph on Wall Street.

Also the top quartile performance in each of the last three years (and in 2026), something very difficult to do.

Finally, hiring in Portugal is offering Portuguese talent opportunities that I couldn’t even dream of when I graduated in Portugal.

6 — What recommendations would you give to Portugal and its entrepreneurs and managers?

The American market offers the best profit opportunities and the most competition to test and improve the product. Developing outside this market may yield good profits for a few years, but they will always be limited and vulnerable to competition, in the future, from better companies that have won the American (or Chinese) market.

7 — In which sectors of the country where you live could Portuguese companies find customers?

Everywhere. Even custard tarts are growing. The United States is the largest market in the world, with high growth rates, and with a lot of internal diversity, making room for everyone who offers a good and differentiated product or service. For companies that are hesitant because of tariffs or other geopolitical frictions, I have two messages: first, the rules here are the same for everyone, so competitors are on the same footing; Then, open branches here and look for local partners. Contacting the Portuguese diaspora is a good first step towards entering the American market. The prize is worth it.

8 — In which sectors of Portugal could companies in the country where you live want to invest?

With joy, I have witnessed the increase in American investment in Portugal. There is opportunity for more: tourism, IT talent, Data Centers.

With some strategic stability, there is still opportunity to attract American investment in defense companies, technology, shipyards (mainly for coast guard and navy within NATO). It should be noted that many of the American technological innovations came from defense projects (such as the internet, space exploration, GPS…)

However, Portugal needs to ensure stability of rules and commitment. Episodes such as the sale of TAP, which was later undone by a new government, or changes in citizenship rules without protecting those who are in the middle of the process, erode the confidence of entrepreneurs and partners in the geography of Portugal. We must not forget that there are 200 other countries that want to attract American technological investment.

9 — What is the competitive advantage of the country in which you live that could be replicated in Portugal?

Avoiding areas in which the difference in scale of the two countries could be a counter-argument, I would say: meritocracy, efficiency and speed of the judicial process, financial literacy and remuneration of savings (financial repression in Portugal), lower tax burden, less bureaucracy and regulation. Bet more on people and companies and less on the government.

10 — Are you thinking of returning to Portugal? Why?

It will never be black and white. I have one foot on each side and family on both sides. I will continue to fight for countries to unite more and more. I have been hiring people in Portugal and I hope to hire more in the future, creating more opportunities in Portugal. I also hope to buy a house in Portugal. But I will not stop being based in the USA. The Atlantic bridge has my heart and is my destiny.

As part of the partnership between the Portuguese Diaspora Council and Jornal de Negócios, Pedro Ramos, Founder and CEO of Somar Capital Management, shared insights into his journey in the United States and his perspective on Portugal’s economic potential. 1 — What led you to leave Portugal?
