What led you to leave Portugal?

From an early age, I wanted to build an international career and experience living abroad. This desire grew stronger through the two university exchange programmes I took part in, first in the Netherlands and then in Hong Kong. Leaving Portugal seemed like an opportunity to work in very different environments and cultures while also growing on a personal level. I began my career at Bain in Madrid, then lived in Santiago, Chile, and am currently based in Dubai, working primarily in Saudi Arabia.

2. What advantages or disadvantages has being Portuguese brought you?

Being Portuguese has brought me advantages above all. I have rarely encountered preconceived ideas; on the contrary, I have found people curious and receptive. The cultural and linguistic proximity to Spain and Latin America made it easier for me to adapt to those markets and learn Spanish. In my sector, sport, Portugal has also built a strong international reputation, particularly in football, through generations of players, coaches and other professionals.

The main disadvantage is that we have a smaller pool of talent and less developed professional networks than larger countries. In other markets, I have seen how professionals, companies and investors from the same country support one another, share contacts and create opportunities together. I believe Portugal could do more in this respect, and initiatives such as the Portuguese Diaspora Council help strengthen precisely these networks.

3. What obstacles have you had to overcome, and how did you do so?

One of the biggest challenges was moving to Chile on my own at the age of 25, without knowing anyone and to a country with very few Portuguese people. Work gave me an initial network, while sport and other interests helped me build a life outside the office and integrate more quickly.

Professionally, working in strategic consulting in new markets requires cultural adaptation. I sought to understand each context, stay closely attuned to local realities and, above all, get to know local people and learn from mentors with greater experience in each market.

4. What do you admire most about the country where you live?

I live in the United Arab Emirates and work primarily in Saudi Arabia, two countries I admire for different reasons. In the UAE, I am impressed by the quality of life that has been built in just a few decades, particularly in terms of safety, the quality of services, administrative simplicity and the conditions for raising a family. All of this makes the country a place where many people want to settle for the long term, rather than simply pass through.

In Saudi Arabia, I admire the scale and pace of economic and social transformation. Historically a more closed country, it is opening up to the world and diversifying its economy, with sport serving as one of the key drivers. Progress and optimism are particularly visible among its very young population. This is an energy I value and sometimes feel is lacking in Europe.

5. What do you admire most about the company or organisation you work for?

At BCG, I admire the professionalism of its people and the ability to draw quickly on expertise from different markets and fields. It is a truly international organisation where it is possible to learn from people from all over the world. I also value the opportunity to work closely with strategic decision-makers in both the private and public sectors. In the Middle East in particular, this allows us to follow large-scale strategies and projects in a context where the transformation of countries and various sectors is highly visible, even over short periods of time.

6. What recommendations would you give to Portugal and its business leaders and managers?

Portugal should take a more proactive approach to making use of its international network. To business leaders looking to enter new markets, I would recommend gaining a thorough understanding of the local context, building relationships and making greater use of the diaspora as a bridge. Organisations such as the Portuguese Diaspora Council bring together professionals with strong positions across different regions and sectors and can help accelerate this process.

We also need to make better use of some of the advantages we already have. Sport is a good example: Portugal has a strong international reputation, particularly in football, but our talent and expertise remain quite fragmented. A stronger network connecting professionals, companies and investors could help us generate greater value from that reputation in areas such as services, technology, events, content, education and tourism.

7. In which sectors in the country where you live could Portuguese companies find customers?

In the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia, there are opportunities in areas where Portuguese companies have recognised expertise, such as tourism and hospitality, architecture, engineering, construction, culture and entertainment.

In sport, the opportunity is particularly significant in Saudi Arabia. The growth of sporting competitions and preparations for the 2034 FIFA World Cup are creating demand in areas such as stadium construction and training facilities, infrastructure operations and maintenance, technology, events and other specialised services. The privatisation and professionalisation of clubs are also opening up opportunities in commercial and operational activities, management and sports development, where Portuguese companies can draw on the expertise and credibility Portugal has built in football.

8. In which sectors in Portugal might companies from the country where you live want to invest?

Portugal can be attractive to investors from the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia because of its stability, access to the European market and competitive costs. Renewable energy, tourism, logistics, technology, data centres and real estate strike me as particularly relevant sectors.

In sport, I see a clear opportunity in football. Portugal combines high-quality clubs and academies, a strong capacity to develop talent, access to European competitions and valuations below those of the major leagues. Qatar Sports Investments’ acquisition of a stake in SC Braga is a concrete example of the interest Gulf investors have in Portuguese football. I also see opportunities in projects combining sport, tourism, retail and real estate, ranging from stadiums and their surrounding areas to residential or hotel developments linked to golf, padel or other sporting experiences.

9. What competitive advantage does the country where you live have that could be replicated in Portugal?

One of the United Arab Emirates’ main competitive advantages is its almost obsessive focus on making the country more attractive to live in, visit and invest in. There is a long-term vision, but also a strong emphasis on identifying problems quickly, defining solutions and putting them into practice. This is evident in the digitalisation of services, the ease of investing and the continuous improvement of mobility and public spaces.

Not everything can be replicated in Portugal, but we have the conditions to be more agile than larger economies. Portugal has already made enormous progress in attracting visitors; the next challenge is to be equally competitive for those deciding where to live, invest or establish a business.

10. Do you plan to return to Portugal? Why?

Yes. Returning to Portugal has always been part of my plans. What was initially intended to be a three-to-five-year experience has turned into a decade as new opportunities have arisen. My wife and I are both Portuguese and, now that we have two young daughters, we would like them to grow up and put down roots in Portugal too, close to their family and our culture.

At the same time, being based in Portugal is not incompatible with an international career. I would like to bring back the experience and relationships I have built abroad while continuing to work in and develop opportunities in other markets from Portugal.

As part of the partnership between the Portuguese Diaspora Council and Jornal de Negócios, this initiative highlights Diogo Aires Coelho’s international career, focusing on his experience in strategic consulting and investment in the sports sector in the Middle East, as well as business opportunities and the potential for collaboration between Portugal and the region’s markets.
[12

<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v21.3 -
