The president of the Diaspora Council who will hold the 7th Annual Meeting this Friday under the theme “Thinking about our planet\u2019s economy”, said that Portugal has added value and has to assert itself in the global carbon retention chain. <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
“Portugal must reposition itself and it must have a\nrole, probably not in leadership, but in integrating the global production\nchain in the retention of CO2” (carbon dioxide), said Filipe Botton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The country “has value-added, at various levels, and\nhas to prove it, (…) and can help in this matter through innovation,” he\nsaid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Speaking to Lusa on the event\u2019s eve, Fliipe Botton recalled\nthat Portugal \u00ab has a number of companies that have invested in innovation\nin various areas related to the theme of sustainability \u00bb, a word that is \u00ab very\nbroad \u00bb and \u00ab much more than environment \u00bb. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Therefore, he considered that \u201cthrough its companies, its\neconomic agents\u201d, the country \u201cshould try to position itself\u201d, adding: \u201cAnd it\nhas to prepare for it\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That is why the Diaspora Council this year brought the theme\n\u201c Thinking about our planet\u2019s economy \u201d for discussion, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“We think we have to prepare for the future and we must\nprepare our young people to face this issue,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThis is our seventh meeting, and as it has been our\nprerogative, we have tried to bring insights from our advisers, informal\nambassadors of Portugal, who are part of the Diaspora Council, on issues that\nare relevant to Portugal,\u201d he recalled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe thought about ‘rethinking the economy’, because in fact,\nit’s all about what’s going on in the world,\u201d said Filipe de Botton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It has to do with the digital world, the new consumers, the\naging of the population, the new production chain that \u201chas to be rethought in\nlight of these events\u201d, but also with the \u201crole that Portugal can play above\nall in relation to information technologies. retention or carbon recapture, \u201dhe\nexplained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For the businessman, the theme has been much debated and\nmediatized, but “full of` VIPs`, because unfortunately there are more `VIPs`\nthan properly thought and reflected content in social networks.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt has to do with CO2 capture, it has to do with planting\ntrees to offset CO2 emissions through photosynthesis,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But, he considered “unfortunately, all this for the\nconsumer society we live in, is not enough.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cSo we have to create new CO2 retention technologies,\u201d\nconcludes the Diaspora Council chairman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In this seventh meeting, which will take place, as usual in\nthe Cascais Citadel, will be present more than two thirds of the counselors\npresent, that is, 62 of the 96 who are part of the council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The VII Annual Meeting of the Portuguese Diaspora Council\nhas as its theme \u201c Thinking about our planet\u2019s economy \u201d and will discuss,\namong other things, the challenges of the transition to a new production and\nconsumption system, read in the event’s announcement, which counts at the\nopening session with the intervention of Portuguese Minister of State and\nForeign Affairs, Augusto Santos Silva and at the closing with the President of\nthe Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In previous years, the Diaspora Council’s annual meeting\ndiscussed topics such as talent and the national education system, investment,\nleadership and diversity, cybersecurity, digital age management, cultural\ndiplomacy, 21st century skills, industry development audiovisual industry in\nPortugal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Portuguese Diaspora Council is a private non-profit\nassociation, founded in 2012, with the High Patronage of the Presidency of the\nRepublic and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This year was recognized by the Portuguese State with the\nstatus of Non-Governmental Organization for Development (NGDO), for the work\nthat has been developed in favor of relations between Portugal and Africa\nthrough the EurAfrican Forum platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Its main instrument of intervention is a\nPortuguese-Portuguese lusodescendant network, the World Portuguese Network,\nwhich comprises 96 members, spread across 26 countries and 50 cities on five\ncontinents, with intervention and influence in the areas of Economy, Science,\nCulture and Citizenship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
