António Simões is the Group Chief Executive Officer of Legal & General Group, one of the United Kingdom’s most established institutions in life insurance, savings, pensions, and asset management. He was appointed to the role in June 2023 and assumed office on 1 January 2024. The Group manages approximately £1.2 trillion in assets and remains a leading reference in the financial and insurance sectors in the UK.

Previously, he served as CEO of Santander Spain and Regional Head of Europe at Banco Santander, where he was responsible for the bank’s operations in Spain and for coordinating Santander’s local leadership teams across Portugal, Poland, and the United Kingdom.

Before joining Santander, he spent 13 years at HSBC, where he held several senior leadership positions, including Chief Executive of Global Private Banking and Chief Executive of HSBC in the UK and Continental Europe. He also served as a Board Director of the Group’s French and Turkish subsidiaries.

In 2009, he was named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum. He began his professional career in investment banking at Goldman Sachs in London and later spent 10 years at McKinsey & Company, where he became a Partner in the Financial Services practice across multiple geographies.

In September 2007, he joined HSBC as Head of Strategy, reporting directly to the Group Chairman. In January 2012, he was appointed Head of Retail Banking and Wealth Management for Europe, overseeing all aspects of HSBC’s retail banking, wealth management, asset management, and insurance business across the UK and Europe.

He holds a degree in Economics from Nova School of Business and Economics and an MBA with honours from Columbia Business School.

He was one of the founding members of the Portuguese Diaspora Council and has been a member since 2012.
