Carlos Macedo e Couto, born in Lisbon in 1951 and holding a degree in Architecture from ESBAL, began his career working on the reconstruction of Angra do Heroísmo following the 1980 earthquake. In 1981 he moved to Macau, where he led the Urban Planning Department and left a profound mark on the city through landmark projects such as the Government Headquarters building, the Court of First Instance, Fisherman’s Wharf, the Landmark Hotel, and the LRT stations. He also played a decisive role in the creation and development of the Casa de Portugal in Macau.
In 2010, he was the architect responsible for the award-winning Portugal Pavilion at the Shanghai Expo, internationally recognized for its innovative use of cork. Subsequently, in Taiwan, he designed the Lihpao Land international motor racing circuit complex.
In 2012, he launched the TUGA concept in Taipei and Singapore, combining a restaurant and gourmet shop to promote Portuguese cuisine and wines. TUGA Taipei is now one of the city’s leading restaurants and one of the main importers of Portuguese wine in Taiwan.
A prominent figure in the Portuguese presence in Asia, he continues to embrace new projects in the region. In 2022, he was awarded the Gold Medal of Merit of the Portuguese Communities.
