His family history reflects the gradual development of an identity shaped by two cultures. His mother, Elisa, joined her parents in Portugal during her teenage years, further consolidating the family’s integration into the country. Years later, she started a family with another individual originally from Taiwan, also known as Formosa.

Born and raised in Portugal, Den grew up in a distinctly Portuguese cultural environment. Despite his Taiwanese ethnic background, his identity was deeply shaped by Portuguese education, values and social life. From an early age, he naturally assumed the role of cultural mediator between communities, an experience that would significantly influence his professional and institutional career.

He attended St. Julian’s School in Carcavelos, where he developed a strong multicultural awareness and a particular sensitivity to the challenges of integration and identity within diaspora communities. This experience helped shape his strategic vision of the role that emigrant communities can play as bridges between cultures and economies.

Fluent in Portuguese, English and Mandarin — the latter further developed through periods of intensive study in Taiwan, including training in a monastic setting — he established himself as a strategic facilitator during a period of growing Asian investment in Portugal, particularly in the context of investment-based residency programmes (Golden Visa). He promoted Portugal as a safe and attractive destination for investment and residency.

He founded Portal Martim Moniz, the first Portuguese-Chinese bilingual media platform certified by the Portuguese Regulatory Authority for the Media (ERC) and the Directorate-General for Employment and Labour Relations (DGERT). Its inauguration was attended by institutional representatives of Lisbon City Council and the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Portugal.

He currently serves as an administrator of the family-owned Prosperjasmim Group, which operates in Portugal and maintains links with the Asian market. The group develops initiatives in the real estate, cultural and tourism sectors, as well as projects promoting Portuguese identity, particularly in Lisbon, Funchal and Taiwan.

He previously served as President of the Taiwanese Chambers of Commerce in Europe, which are part of the international network of the World Taiwanese Chambers of Commerce (WTCC). During his tenure, he organised the first-ever international Taiwanese conference in Portugal and promoted institutional visits to Taiwan. Earlier, in 2018, he informally facilitated meetings between Portuguese and Taiwanese entities, including the Directorate-General for Economic Activities (DGAE), contributing to the strengthening of economic, technological and cultural relations between Portugal, Taiwan and Europe.

Den Shyan Chuang joined the Portuguese Diaspora Council as a World Advisor in October 2026.
