Fernando Macário is the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of M42 in Abu Dhabi, where he is a member of the Executive Leadership Team. He leads clinical governance, medical strategy, and the development of value-based and artificial intelligence–driven care models, with impact across multiple geographies. A nephrologist by training, he began his career at the Coimbra University Hospital Centre, where he worked for two decades in the Department of Nephrology and the Renal Transplant Unit.

He served as a Senior Consultant in Nephrology at CHUC and clinically coordinated the Renal Transplant Unit for ten years. He held several scientific leadership roles, including President of the Portuguese Society of Transplantation, of which he is an Honorary Member. He was also a member of the Board of the Nephrology College of the Portuguese Medical Association and a consultant to the Directorate-General of Health. After joining Diaverum, he became National Medical Director, Iberian Medical Director, and later Global Chief Medical Officer, assuming responsibility for clinical governance and digital transformation across 24 countries.

He graduated in Medicine from the University of Coimbra and completed the Managing Health Care Delivery program at Harvard Business School. The author of multiple publications and an organizer of international meetings in nephrology and transplantation, he has actively promoted Portuguese medical excellence abroad and strengthened ties between Portugal, the Middle East, and the global scientific community.
