Paulo Bártolo is a Full Professor (Presidential Chair in Additive Manufacturing) at the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore. At NTU, he also serves as Executive Director of the Singapore Centre for 3D Printing, Director of the NTU Hub of the National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Cluster, and coordinator of the Doctoral Programme for Portuguese students funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT).

He is an Honorary/Visiting Professor at several universities in China, Europe, and North America, and acts as a consultant for various national and international scientific research agencies, including FCT and the European Research Council, as well as for multiple international research institutes. He is also a Fellow of CIRP (International Academy for Production Engineering). In Portugal, he is a member of the Advisory Board of the Technological Centre for the Moulds, Special Tools and Plastics Industry (CENTIMFE), a member of the Advisory Board of the Centre for Rapid and Sustainable Product Development (CDRSP) of the Polytechnic Institute of Leiria (IPL), and collaborates with the Research Centre for Architecture, Urbanism and Design (CIAUD) at the University of Lisbon and with the ESAD-IDEA Research Centre.

He has led and participated in several research projects funded by A*STAR Singapore, Singapore National Research Foundation, EPSRC UK, Innovate UK, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Royal Society UK, FCT, Portuguese Innovation Agency, the European Commission, and industry partners.

His main research areas include additive manufacturing, smart and sustainable production, bioprinting, biomaterials, and regenerative medicine, in which he publishes in leading scientific journals. He sits on the editorial boards of several international journals, including the International Journal of Extreme Manufacturing, where he serves as Associate Editor — this is the top-ranked journal in the manufacturing field and the first in the area to achieve an impact factor above 20. He is the co-author of over 250 journal articles and 24 books.

He is listed among the top 2% of scientists worldwide (Stanford University/Elsevier ranking) and has received numerous awards and public recognitions, including the Kobayashi Award for contributions to materials science and engineering; the title of Professor Honoris Causa from IPL; the Gold Medal of Merit for Portuguese Communities from the Portuguese Government; the Medal of Merit of the City of Leiria; and several official commendations published in the Portuguese Government Gazette by both the Government and IPL.

Paulo Jorge da Silva Bártolo has been Portugal’s World Advisor since June 2025.
