Renato Roldão is an Administrator (AD) at the European Commission, DG CLIMA. He is a specialist in the areas of Climate, Energy, and Environmental policies, with over 20 years of experience. Before joining the European Union, he worked in Asia for more than 16 years. His experience includes participation in the Climate negotiating team under the UNFCCC (in 1997 and 2010) and leading Observer delegations to the Conferences of the Parties (COP) COP21 and COP22, as well as coordinating Observer delegations from COP23 to COP28. Additionally, Renato has experience supporting the design and implementation of GHG emissions trading systems in the European Union, China, Korea, and Ukraine.
He was awarded the rank of Officer of the Order of Prince Henry in 2012.
Renato Roldão was Team Leader of the EU-China ETS Platform project between 2014 and 2024. He was also a member of the Supervisory Board of the European Chamber of Commerce in China (EUCCC) representing Portugal, appointed by the Embassy of Portugal in Beijing, and in this capacity he was elected to the Executive Committee of the organization for a one-year term (May 2023 – May 2024).
Renato Roldão obtained a Master’s degree in Chinese Studies from the University of Aveiro, with a thesis on the use of renewable energy in Northwestern China. He completed the coursework for a Master’s in “Economics, Energy, and Environmental Policy” (ISEG), later transitioning to a PhD in “Sustainable Energy Systems” under the MIT Portugal Program.
Since December 2023, Renato Roldão has been a member of the Portuguese Diaspora Council.
