Portugal conquered the bronze medal, being the third European Union country with the biggest rate of its energetic necessities to be satisfied with renewable energy. Only five member-sates of the European Union (EU) revealed having an energetic consumption of renewable energy superior to 50% of the consumed energy. First is Austria with 73% of the consumed energy being renewable. It is followed by Sweeden with 65% and together with Portugal, in third place, we have Denmark both with 54%. Completing the Top 5 we have Letonia with 51%. The data was presented in 2016.
However, the renewable energy growth is not transversal to all member-states. Malta only consumes 6% of renewable energy. Below the 10% is Luxembourg and Hungary with 7%, and Chipre with 9%.
Electricity from renewable contributed for nearly 30% of the consumed energy of the European Union, reveals the study. The most important source is the hydroelectric, the second, the eolian, and the last, solar energy.
Regarding Portugal, there is an improvement when compared with 2015. It is predicted that both 2017 and 2018 will have a good performance. On the last month of March, according to APREN (Associação Portuguesa de Energias Renováveis) for the first time, the electric renewable production exceeded the needs of mainland Portugal.
On that month, the renewable sources reached “an historic representative of 103,6% of the electric consumption of mainland Portugal Continental (4.647 GWh)”, announced APREN.
