Diogo Martins is a Portuguese doctor based in London with extensive experience in global health and international development. He has dedicated his career to the field of public health, emphasizing the promotion of collective health and well-being and the prevention of disease.

He currently leads a £100 million portfolio at the Wellcome Trust. Wellcome is the largest philanthropic organization in the UK and the third largest in the world, with an investment portfolio valued at £38.2 billion (2022). As Research Lead, he plays a strategic role in driving innovative scientific discoveries in the health sector, with a particular focus on tropical diseases affecting developing countries.

In 2019, he was elected President of PARSUK, the association of Portuguese graduates in the UK. He focuses on strengthening scientific diplomacy between Portugal and the UK, as well as the professional development of Portuguese academics and researchers abroad. Since 2016, Diogo has also been carrying out research at the renowned London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, where he studies the resilience of global health systems to climate change.

Diogo has worked at the World Health Organization, represented the global medical community in the drafting of the Paris Agreement to combat climate change, and was a Fellow of the Rockefeller Foundation – Boston University 3-D Commission.

His commitment to advancing public health and his influential role in key global organizations make him a leading figure in promoting science and strengthening the international medical and scientific community.

Diogo Martins has been a member of the Portuguese Diaspora Council since October 2023.
