EurAfrican Forum 2022

The fifth edition of the EurAfrican Forum was held on the 28th and 29th of July at Nova SBE, in Carcavelos, where the theme – “Empowering EU-Africa Alliance in times of dirusption” was discussed.

The first day of the event was dedicated to holding various discussion panels, with the aim of fostering dialogue and creating new forms of cooperation between Portugal and Africa, and the session was opened by His Excellency, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, João Gomes Cravinho. The first panel – The New Geopolitical and Geostrategic Map: the Great Challenges, Risks, Opportunities and Pathways for Europe and Africa within this new context – was marked by the intervention of the former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Paulo Portas.

The second panel – Health, Education and Science – was particularly marked by the intervention of Mónica Ferro, Director of the Office of the United Nations Population Fund in Geneva, a position she has held since 2017. The panel was made up of government figures from African countries, namely, the Minister of Health of Ghana, Kwaku Agyeman-Manu; the Minister of Health of Ethiopia, Lia Tadesse; and, the Minister of Health of Angola, Silvia Lutucuta.

The third panel – Economy and Employment – had the special presence of the Director General of the European Commission, Koen Doens. The fourth and final panel of the day – Energy Transition, Climate Change and Digital Transformation – was marked by interventions by Pedro Norton, CEO of Finagest TBC, and the Minister of Information and Communication Technology and Innovation of Rwanda.

The second day of the event featured special interventions by António Guterres, Secretary General of the UN, José Manuel Durão Barroso, Chairman of the EurAfrican Forum and President of the Board of the General Assembly of the Portuguese Diaspora Council; António Calçada de Sá, President of the Board of the Portuguese Diaspora Council; and Koen Doens, Director General of the European Commission. The day was particularly marked by the conversation between His Exas. the President of the Portuguese Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and the President of the Republic of Cape Verde, José Maria Neves.
